Tip and Trick Detail
Binding an Xref with Insert Bind from the Command Line
*Applies to: AutoCAD 2000, 2000i, 2002 and 2004*

Since the days of AutoCAD R14 you could Bind a drawing with the type of insert from the dialog box, and this holds true through the most recent releases of AutoCAD.  If you take a look at the command line for the Xref command there is no way to use the Insert type when Binding, see below for command line.

Command: -xref
Enter an option [?/Bind/Detach/Path/Unload/Reload/Overlay/Attach] <Attach>: b
Enter xref name(s) to bind:

This is why there was a new system variable (or setvar) added to AutoCAD 2000 and later.  This system variable is called BindType.  It controls the behavior of how AutoCAD performs the Bind function on an Xref.

0 (Bind Type) -  Behavior of the legacy or standard bind
("drawing1|blk" turns into "drawing1$0$blk")

1 (Insert Type) -  Behavior of the insert bind
("drawing1|blk" turns into "blk")

Command Line:
Command: bindtype
Enter new value for BINDTYPE <0>: 1
